Cold Water Therapy Benefits

What is Cold Water Therapy?

Cold water therapy is the practice of using freezing water to treat health conditions or stimulate health benefits. It's also known as cold hydrotherapy.

There are many beauty benefits when it comes to cold water. One of the most supported benefit is that cold water therapy can help reduce inflammation in your body. Other articles may tell you that cold water can close your pores and hot water can open them. However, that is most definitely not the case. There simply isn't anything that can physically make the pores bigger or smaller.

If you want to reap the benefits of cold water therapy, you need to get used to being uncomfortable for short periods.

Cold Water Therapy Benefits

As I mentioned above cold water helps with reducing inflammation and swelling of the body. The reason cold water helps with this is mainly due to your blood vessels constrict and reduces blood flow to the area. Hence, why we apply ice to an injury.

Meanwhile, washing your face with cold water can reduce puffy under eyes by tightening up the skin. Taking cold showers first thing in the morning forces your body to maintain normal temperature thus burning fat, increasing blood circulation, and reducing muscle soreness after a workout. Think you can sit in an ice bath for 10 to 15 minutes a day?

"Athletes who soaked in a pool of cold water (12°C to 15°C) reported less muscle soreness than those who had no hydrotherapy after exercising." – Healthline

My Experience

I personally have a cold shower every night before bed. I've found that it helps improve my sleep and I wake up feeling refreshed compared to a warm shower which has it benefits. But, I prefer cold water especially because of how silky smooth my hair feels afterwards.

Try It Out

In slow intervals, turn the thermostat to make the water colder. Each time the temperature drops you should feel uncomfortable, then comfortable again, relatively quickly. Repeat this process to get to the coldest temperature.

Bottom Line

The bottom line is that cold water therapy can help cute down on muscle soreness, get you in a better mood, aid your immune system, and boost your metabolism.
